Sisimuit – Journey into Greenland

If you ever visit the Arctic region, and you find yourself between the great oceans Altantic and Arctic then your final destination should be Sisimuit. A part of the mystical Greenland, this part of the world is something beyond imagination. This town of Sisimuit in the central part of Greenland a little to the western side, is also the second largest in this place. Existing since 4500 years, the town of Sisimuit is also the administrative hub of the Municipality here. With influences from the Dorset culture, Saqqaq culture, Sisimuit has a lot of Thule influence also. The Thule community forms most of the people of Sisimuit. Even today there are ancient artifacts found here and the place was a favourite earlier as it had the best kind of fauna and the marine animals found this a good place to live in. Today Sisimuit has a mix of Danish and Inuit population who have been living here since the 1700’s . Hans Egede is a great leader who is popular here . He belonged to the 17th century.

With this kind of background, Sisimuit is an intriguing destination to head for and is worth the experience. Today the town is a great business centre and has fishing as its main industry.. When you go around the place you can see the Taseralik Culture Center which is the second of its kind , the first one being in Nuuk.

Tourists like to come here as it is ice free and the port is viable. This town of Sisimuit is also a shipping zone for Greenland on the western side and also the northwestern region. Sisimuit also has an airport and there are flights connecting it to Europe.

The Kangerluarsunnguaq Bay is another attraction. It separates Sisimuit from the Palasip Qaqqaa and is a nice spot to see. The panoramic view from here is great. The airport is situated at the foot of the Palasip Qaqqaa which lies to the north. There is a line of skerries in the western side and the navigable bay surely is a lovely sight.

Here again lies a lovely beach though of dark sand. But tourists come here during summer and enjoy the beach atmosphere and the skerries lying along the coast. This place is very popular amongst tourists during the summer months. The lovely rugged terrain and the scenic splendor attracts many to Sisimuit.

Then there is the valley of Sisimuit which is again a beautiful spot . Here there are the lakes  at Alanngorsuaq which are again a pinnacle of beauty. These areas are favourite picnic spots here at Sisimuit and the locals also prefer to come here for picnics and outings.

The Alanngorsuaq mountain is also another tourist spot with a lot of lakes surrounding it on all sides. This is the place which provides water to Sisimuit. This water reservoir is a beautiful place and again is a popular picnic spot. There is a gravel path here which leads to the reservoir.
